Upcoming Beginner Classes in 2026-2027

 

The Boulder Samba School offers an expanding number of opportunities to learn about Brazilian music and dance. The BSS regularly offers classes for adults and children that introduce participants to the instruments, techniques and rhythms of Brazilian samba music, focusing on the material used in Bateria Alegria. Watch a beginning  bateria class video to see what it’s like.

   Boulder Samba School Presents:

   Introduction to Brazilian Percussion Series!

   Next 4-Class Series: Schedule coming for 2027

   Cost: $80/adult; $60/youth; $140/two adults “bring a friend”       price

 

This class will introduce participants to the instruments, techniques, and rhythms of Brazilian samba music, focusing on the music of the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All instruments including caixa (snare), surdo (bass drum), agogô, chocalho, repenique, and tamborim will be provided.  The class is open to participants of all levels of experience and ability.

Pandeiro Class

With Carl Dixon, Music Director of the Boulder Samba School and percussionist of Ginga

Please contact Carl to receive information when a group pandeiro class is scheduled.

This class will introduce the basic techniques and rhythms of the Pandeiro. Each class will include working on fundamental tones and techniques, learning new rhythms (samba, pagode, partido alto, baiao, maracatu, funk, etc.), and playing together as an ensemble. The class will be cumulative, but there will be ample review during each class. Participants should have their own pandeiro for class and to practice between classes.

 

 

Samba Dance Classes

Alegria Dancers

The Boulder Samba School Dance program includes a performing dance ensemble, classes and workshops with local teachers, and master classes with guest artists.

The Alegria Dancers is the dance performing ensemble of the Boulder Samba School. Their goal is to share the many ways Brazilian music and dance go together while celebrating the culture and traditions behind them. The group is a combination of advanced amateur and professional dancers. The group started in 2025 under the leadership and direction of Maren Waldman, and it continues to grow. The Alegria Dancers perform a variety of styles of Brazilian dance, including Samba no Pé, samba reggae, and more. They work in close collaboration with BSS musical director, Carl Dixon. The group has open, rolling auditions and is accepting new members. Please contact Maren Waldman directly (link to maren@marenwaldman.com) if you’re interested!

The Boulder Samba School also presents and collaborates on Brazilian dance classes and workshops.
